I wish I can do what you did. I would faint if I see that many wire when I open up the panel LOL.

dcpc08161992,

I have to tell you I was a little bit intimidated looking at that junction panel. But with a wiring diagram in hand it was just a matter of finding the right wires - kind of a "Where's Waldo" thing.

Hope this helped.

very nice write-up

I'm sure it took longer than the installation itself.

Somehow, most members here don't realize that. They just read it and they're on their way without thanking you for your hard work.

I went with the scosche kit for a smoother finish.

Luckily on my eclipse unit, it came with a steering harness that plugs directly with the van, and no programming was necessary.

gs3tek,

Thanks for the reply. I do appreciate it. While the write-up took a little while....the install did take longer . As long as it helps folks to understand what is involved, and maybe show them it isn't all that difficult and they can do it with a little fore thought and prep, then I'm happy.

You mention the scosche kit - I had heard about it, along with the Metra kit. I didn't see it at Crutchfield, and the Metra kit came as part of their 'complete installation package' (or whatever it is called). Does the Scosche kit have a smoother finish, one that is closer to the Toyota OEM finishes? Also - does the Scosche kit mate better to those long, thin side trim pieces next to the head unit on each side? The Metra kit I installed joined cleanly to the upper trim/cover piece, and to the vents beneath it. To the sides it is a somewhat smooth join, but up where the side trim pieces curve up and forward, kind-of over the dash it isn't quite right.

It would have been nice to not have to deal with the resister soldering on the SWI-JACK and the programming....but it works pretty well, so I'm basically happy with it.

Hi. Yes, the scosche was a smoother finish, pretty much oem. I ordered it on ebay with the harness.

They aligned very good. On the right side, it was slight gap (1/16" ), but bending it and the silver piece closer together made it fit tighter.

Also, it was recessed a little, which allowed the screen to stand upright.

I'll try to post some pictures.

That was one reason why I stayed with eclipse since toyota uses them in the past for their nav system, so a lot of plugs were compatible.....the steering wheel control was a no fuss-no extra $$$ spent issue

Thanks! We are very happy with the install and results. The difference between the new head unit, the quality of the sound and its functions versus the stock LE head unit is night and day. It is pretty cool to play tunes from the iPod, or the radio, have the nav running all the time, and then be able to send and receive calls via bluetooth. I highly recommend this to anyone out there if they can accept the cost $$.
