Headlight Opaque/Foggy. Need Advice

Hey everyone.

I hope I've posted this in the correct forum section. If not, please forgive me. I couldn't find the troubleshooting/problems section.

Anyways, I own an 05 Toyota Camry, of which the headlight (driver side) has gotten foggy. It's certainly not as transparent as the passenger side light. At first I wasn't sure why one was foggy and the other wasn't, but then I took a closer look at the foggy light and noticed a small crack on the outside casing. I believe this crack has allowed moisture to enter the light. I've heard of people restoring their headlights with special DIY kits, but I've decided to take the route of simply replacing the light with an aftermarket light from an online store. I found two sites that I particularly liked, but I'm unsure of whether or not they are legitimate businesses. Furthermore, I don't want to fall prey to a scam. Has anyone purchased from either of these sites and can verify that they are a legitimate business? Thanks in advance.

there are downsides to aftermarket headlights...... many times the fitment isnt quite as good and the big one is the reflectors are crap..... the beam pattern wont be nearly as good as stock

Disable Auto Lights, but keep DRLs

I posted my question in this thread: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/sh...309869&page=10, a couple of days ago, but I didn't get any answer or help. Maybe the thread was a little old, or no one cared to read it(?) So I'm hoping someone reads my thread and help me with my problem.

Anyway, has anyone come up with the idea of disabling the auto lights while still keeping the DRL's, yet?

Reply 1 : Disable Auto Lights, but keep DRLs

Yeah I remember reading your question. But I think most of us dont know the answer to that so we never replied lol.

Anyway, apart from having a cheesy LED pointed at the sensor, I think I may have a better solution. If you can get to the wires behind the light sensor on the dash, cut the positive and wire a switch in there, you could control if you want the auto lights on or off. Im sure that would work.

Reply 2 : Disable Auto Lights, but keep DRLs

Being that they are on the same circuit (ie one wire disconnects them both) it may be a computer controlled setting.

Most people on here could care less about keeping DRL's, so it hasn't been delved into very deeply.

Reply 3 : Disable Auto Lights, but keep DRLs

I discovered the answer to this when I brought my car in for service last week. Just disconnect the sensor. Your drls will work but the autolights will never come on. No cutting of wires involved.

Reply 4 : Disable Auto Lights, but keep DRLs

anybody knows where the connector for the sensor is? driver side or passenger side?

Reply 5 : Disable Auto Lights, but keep DRLs

odd, the Auto Lights are one of the things I LOVE about the Corollas!

Reply 6 : Disable Auto Lights, but keep DRLs

i think im opposite from everyone else. i want to keep the autolight but disable the drls.

Also, if you disabled the auto light and use the switch, you'll have to physically switch off. No warning whatsoever.

Thanks, but how would I go about disconnecting the sensor?

Well, the reason why I want to disable the auto lights is because the parking lot to my apartment is under the structure, so whenever I'm in there, my lights turn on for a couple of seconds, then turn off when I'm out (during the day). I don't know if that's bad for the lights esp. HIDs when they turn on/off like that since it needs to start/warm up every time they turn on. I also hate it when I drive under overpasses and stop at a red light, my HIDs turn on again for a couple of seconds, then turn off. And when I go through tunnels, you know what I mean already. I just don't like having my lights turn on/off during the day because I don't think it's good for my HIDs. Correct me if I'm wrong though, thanks.

That's actually pretty bad for HIDs if they are turned on again before they've had time to cool down. If you want to disable the autolights, do it. It's your car.

Yeah. StL MO has NOT ONE tunnel and I cannot think of one overpass that has a stoplight below here either... so, that explains why you want them off. Only time i've ever seen them kick off is 1/2 to the office every day as I leave before the sun comes up and get to work when it's sunny.

Not sure. The dealership removed my dash as part of my steering drift recall and I noticed immediately after that my autolights didnt come on but my DRLs still worked. When I brought it back, they fixed it and said the sensor wasnt plugged in. It may be the actual sensor near the windshield on the drivers side, or it may be something in the dash. Im not sure. But if you do find it, take pics and post up a DIY because I have heard this same question asked multiple times and there was no real answer before.

so I'm guessing that HID's take a big beating when the alarm goes off and/or panic button is pressed which obviously flashes the headlights

It was probably the sensor itself, that's my thought.

Need 2nd and reverse shifter cable for 95 Corolla 5spd

Hi,

The dealer wants a lot of money for the 2nd and reverse shifter cable, even with my mechanic's discount.

Anybody have a good used one, or can recommend an aftermarket one (if there is such a thing) for a 95 Corolla wagon with a 1.8 motor and 5 speed? I may need both cables, so if you have both let's talk.

Much appreciated,

Oil Problem

I know its been talked about numerous times, but my Camry has a massive oil leak. We're talking 2 quarts of 5w-30 every day. I believe its the oil pump leaking, as searching has led me to believe. So I looked up the seals I'd need to do the repair and thought it'd be a quick job similar to replacing the alternator, then I read the DIY article and my heart sunk. I'm just wondering of those who have done this repair, how long did it take you from start to finish? I know that while I'm doing this I might as well replace the other seals and timing belt and tensioner / idler pulleys and all that junk. This repair seems to be a little more involved than what I'm used to, but I'm spending almost $150 on oil every month for my car (not to mention the increased suspension bushing deterioration / wear), and since I rely on my car for work (delivery driver) I really need to get this fixed. Any help / tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Also, since its so involved, I decided to get a quote from a shop to do the repair for me, and they quoted me $640 before taxes x_x

Reply 1 : Oil Problem

I'm trying to think about how an oil pumpleak can cause two quarts of oil to leak outside of the engine a day. Where is the oil leaking from, on the outside the engine? Must be pretty visible.

Reply 2 : Oil Problem

I did my 3rd one in 4 hours start to finish, taking my time and being really anal since its my moms ride.

Replace timing belt, water pump, both tensioner and idler pulley, oil pump shaft seal and o ring, cam seal, crank seal, and valve cover gasket set. Remove valve cover and remove cap over camshaft oil seal. This will make your life 100x easier. Replace alternator and power steering belt at the same time.

using quality parts from RockAuto or Napa will be about 200$ish total, if you start early in the morning you should be able to get it done by the end of the day. Since your timing belt is not broken you can just mark the old one and mark the new one the same and slip it on. No need to spend time realigning the engine, which most people find the hardest.

Only "specialty" sort of needed is 19mm impact socket and air gun. You can do the starter method to loosen the crank bolt but the gun makes it a piece of cake.

Reply 3 : Oil Problem

If the timing belt is good, mark it on the cam side, and crank side with a paint marker when you pull it off and line the marks back up (re-use the belt).

If your experienced it should take about 1.5 hour to complete

If your not, figure 2.5-3 hours

Helpful hint. When removing the oil pan, use an air wrench with extensions, Also remove the plastic piece between the Sub-frame and the radiator for easy access to the exhaust downpipe bolts. Remove the first exhaust hanger (two 12mm bolts) too so you can slide the exhaust around easily. Another helpful hint is to Get the #1 and #4 cylinders at Top Dead Center before removing the timing belt.

You will need the following tools to complete the job:

Sockets

10mm (Timing cover "upper and lower", Oil pump / oil housing bolts, Subframe/Radiator Plastic Shroud "Under car")

12mm (Exhaust hanger, Alternator Serpentine belt, Power Steering Belt3)

14mm (Dog bone, Dog bone Bracket, Engine to transmission Bracket, timing tensioner, and idler pulley)

17mm (Exhaust Bolts)

19mm (Crankshaft Pulley bolt)

21mm (tires)

Wrenches

14mm Ratchet Wrench (Regular if you dont have a ratchet wrench)

You may need a Harmonic balancer Puller as well to pull the harmonic balancer off.

Good luck!

Well, I drive a lot. Back when I was a general manager and only drove to my store and back home 5 quarts would last me 2 weeks or so, but now that I'm logging almost 100 spirited stop-and-go miles a day its leaking like a sieve. From just looking under the car and through the passenger fender well you can see that the oil is coming from around the oil pump(theres a very clean spot where the oil has cleaned off the engine block from constantly running down)

Thanks for the quick responses guys. Hopefully I'll be able to do the job in around 4 hours the next time I have a chance to work on it. This will be the furthest I've ever actually dug into my engine, other than simple stuff like the valve cover gasket.

I hope you get it fixed. I don't know where you live, but in some places the police will stop you if there is something wrong with your car (ie excessive smoke, etc) , and in some instances will issue a citation.

'11 SE Speedo reading high

My '11 SE speedometer seems to be reading about 3 MPH fast. Has anyone else noticed anything similar? Any idea if this is something that can be correctly via dealer software settings?

Reply 1 : '11 SE Speedo reading high

Normal for it to read high. Toyota's specs are that it can read as much as 4 mph fast at 60 mph. Our '10 reads 4 mph fast at 65 mph (as does my '05 Tacoma).

Reply 2 : '11 SE Speedo reading high

+1 Mine reads 3 MPH too fast, and it's common among Highlander owners. When I bump up to 255 size tires from 245 I calculate it should bring the speedo error down to 1 MPH too fast.

my 2011 limited is 3 over

Thank you for all the feedback, it's good to know it is normal.

I tested my 2010 Highlander SE using two different Garmin GPS's and a Magellan. All 3 show that my SE reads 2-3 mph high at 65 mph.

hissing under dash

my 1999 solara V6SE has developed a hissing noise under dash recently, the hissing only happen with engine running, but as soon as i tap on the brake lightly, the hissing stopped, and as soon as I take my foot off the brake pedal, the hissing returns, apply brake, no hissing, the hissing noise sound very similar to A/C compressor running, or power steering, but i know AC or power steering were not running at the time.

i can only hear the hissing in my driver seat when engine running, i tried to pop the hood and listen near the brake booster area, but seems like the engine running noise shadow the hissing noise that i heard in my driver seat.

what is failing?

brake booster diaphram? push rod seal???

Reply 1 : hissing under dash

I'm probably wrong but maybe a crack in vacuum lines, mainly brake booster hose.

BTW how many camry/solaras do you have, haha?

Reply 2 : hissing under dash

you have a snake under your dash lol

i would check all your brake/vaccum hoses for damage and replace them

going on a trip with my corolla

this coming weekened i will be going to florida, the place is about 350 miles away. my 97 corolla has 165000 miles and its currently in good shape. i was wondering should i check anything or do anything to the car before i go on this trip? the last thing i want is to be stuck at a highway in the middle of nowhere. i will be changing the coolant and also bought 2 cans of techron fuel system cleaner.

thanks

Reply 1 : going on a trip with my corolla

When is the last time you changed timing belt and tensioner? They should be changed every 60k miles so last time would be at 120k miles. Other than that you should be fine. Just do take the usual stuff with you, engine oil, some coolant and brake fluid.

I would not bother with the fuel system cleaner prior to the trip. Potentially it could just loosen up some gunk that might clog your injectors.

Reply 2 : going on a trip with my corolla

hmm well i got the car when it had 134000 miles. so far i have replaced the clutch, full tune up, and replaced both of the O2 sensors. Thats about it, i'm not sure if the timing belt was changed or not.

Reply 3 : going on a trip with my corolla

a noob question, if i removed the valve cover and turned the upper pulley to see for wear signs on belt, would that mess up the timing?

How do I get a Tach for my Corolla DX?

Hello Everyone, I was wondering how to go about getting a Tach in my 1995 Corolla DX. I noticed the LE was the only one that came standard with a tach.

Thanks

Reply 1 : How do I get a Tach for my Corolla DX?

You can go to ebay or local salvage yards to get a full instrument cluster. Take your coolant or fuel gauge off of your own and put the tachometer from the new instrument cluster in its place. I did it like this.

I had never done anything like this before, so it is easy. But be careful not to break cluster's plastic fasteners.

sorry bro, but this is asked a lot. The odo can be swapped by itself. No need to swap gages fuel or coolant temp gages...

The picture shows the two different clusters...Not a before and after

I read here that it was done in a 99

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/806193...corolla/page-4

But I read here it couldn't be done in a 95, and that you need a placard to show the difference between the old(actual) odo millage and the new one.

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/605140...corolla/page-3

according to trife96 "The odo can be swapped by itself."

Reply 9 : How do I get a Tach for my Corolla DX?

You can just take your speedometer and plug it into the new cluster.

It is just plugging it.Nothing to change/modify.

I did it on my 1994 Geo Prizm.

My instrument cluster was exactly like the one in the first picture. (Except that the narrow bottom part is the top part, top part is the bottom on Geo Prizm, just the frame of the cluster, not the gauges.)

I took the speedometer and put it in the new cluster. My miles were lower, I did not want to use the high miles odometer.

No need to reset miles on the odometer.

Reply 10 : How do I get a Tach for my Corolla DX?

^ correct, I've swapped two already with success. Basically once you remove the cluster, you will notice the cluster splits in two halves. Also you may or may not have to unclip the clear lens depending. Unclip the two halves...and be careful, those plastic tabs can become brittle and break easily. Then you will see the odo is held in by three or four screws in the back....

But on the flip side, the old cluster WITHOUT the tach, also has two screws behind the mph gage. you will have to pull the needle off and remove those two little screws, then proceed to split the cluster and remove the same 3 or 4 screws in the back. The tach cluster will not have the two screws in the front so DON'T pull the needle off or it will be a PITA to get it back right (I made that mistake). But yes, it's not to hard

edit: actually, I think you have to pull the needle off regardless. Which means you will have to spend some time recalibrating it. I did this with the help of a friend and his car by leaving the clear lens off and pulling it on and off until it was right

Reply 11 : How do I get a Tach for my Corolla DX?

trife96, I just saw your cardomain page. How much did replacing the engine and transmission cost you? Looks nice.It seems you did the work yourself.

Reply 12 : How do I get a Tach for my Corolla DX?

Reply 13 : How do I get a Tach for my Corolla DX?

I just took out the cluster. I see what you guys are talking about. That just what I need. Looks the the needle will be the biggest PITA. I guessing you cant just pull it back to zero or something Ill see when I get there. Thank you for the info. I see some on the internet for around 70bucks I'll order next week (birthday money!!)

Reply 14 : How do I get a Tach for my Corolla DX?

I did not have to mess with the needle at all.It did not move.It stayed where it was. Maybe Corolla is different?

You can get it even cheaper.Keep looking at ebay listings, try different search words/ key words. Sometimes even a typo can hide a listing from people, if you find it you are lucky.

What tint level should I go with?!

I have a 1998 Camry XLE and one of the next mods on my list is having it tinted. Spring is coming in Minnesota and with the leather seats and just general comfort at stake it's a needed change. Anyways the exterior is Beige as well as the interior and I was wondering what ppl think a proper % of light would be in this case? I'm quite certain the legal limit is 50%, but honestly at that level what's the point? I've been looking at 35%, but with the lighter interior I have a feeling that would almost lighten it up. What does everyone think? Pics would be great!

....Oh and i want to go the same level all around, unless someone can give a REALLY good reason why that shouldn't happen...Thanks!

Reply 1 : What tint level should I go with?!

Why would you spend $200-500 on tint that your state law will force you to strip off and/or fine you, not to mention it gives legitimate reason to pull you over at any time?

re: ".....not to mention the BA factor!"

No amount of tint will change the fact that you're driving a 98 Camry

Try searching Google or Bing Images, search for Camry window tint shades. Lots of examples of every shade/combination. That way you decide for yourself, and no one has to go on record advising you to break your state's law.

Sometimes the installer will put a sticker on the window that says the percentage of tint. If there is no sticker, then your best bet is ask a police officer friend (if you know someone who's a cop) to check your tint with a light meter. Or buy your own. Those are my best guesses.

That's what I'm saying.

For example: The legal limit applies to the sides separate from the rear, such as 25% sides, 40% rear.

It is, therefore, illegal if the "legal limit" is 25% and you get 25% all around.

Will pull parts for 3/4 of price of junkyard that pulls parts or ebay maybe. Or you can pull them for same % of say pick and pull.

Will calculate shipping. Or you can make an offer on the whole thing.

I need the valve cover nuts and washers, that hold down the valve cover. I haven't checked how much they go for but im having a hard time finding them online.

E-locker?

What's e-locker? My friend told me I might need e-locker for my 93 pickup 4x4. But do I really need that? And how much does it costs?

Don't get an e-locker.. Just get a spool.. He's saying your truck has shitty traction and gets stuck too much but is also calling you a pussy because he doesn't think you have the balls to drive around with a fully locked rear diff 24/7.

Prove him wrong, get a spool

Half Radiator (civic style)

Just a question concerning radiators. I recently got into a minor front end accident and it seems like my fan, and radiator are cracked (fan) and dented in (radiator). I was just wondering, how would I go about the route of the half radiator that are found in some civics?

As of right now, the car doesn't overheat and the temperature gauge stays at the appropriate level so it isn't really a concern, however; I would like to fix it up before I sell my car when I do decide to sell my car.

So yea, basically, what steps would I have to do in order to do a half radiator conversion for my 1996 1.6 4AFE Base model Corolla? thanks for the help guys!

why not just replace the radiator with another regular radiator?

Dropzone springs....

Hello, new to the forum here. So this Saturday I installed dropzone springs from the older generation corolla. Car rides cool and obviously stiffer. I still have stock shocks on the car. I just wanted it to look cool not looking to do anything crazy with it. I noticed a little camber on the back and wonder if there's anything I could do other than replacing the springs? Thing is, I went for the cheap suspension as a temporary method of lowering it. The minute everything goes bad, ill replace both shocks and springs for a better set. Just trying to make it last as long as I can before I have to replace the suspension. What do you guys think? Car now has 6,500 miles. I just got it. I'll post pics in a minute to show you guys what I'm talking about.

Is the back lower than the front?

Reply 4 : Dropzone springs....

at first it was by like less than half an inch. Those pics were taking that same saturday. Today wednesday, it looks even lol.

Reply 5 : Dropzone springs....

take more pics like full side shot and ones form different angles. how low is it? 2 inch drop?

Reply 6 : Dropzone springs....

well a 2 in drop all around is like putting 9thgen megan springs but this looks lower ..more like 9thgen s techs...i like it! but yeah a whole side shot would be awesome!

Reply 7 : Dropzone springs....

Springs won't introduce any camber to these cars no matter how low you go, it's a solid axle. Maybe you had a tiny bit before and just noticed it. Shims or bending the axle are really the only alternatives.

Did u get an alignment?

Reply 9 : Dropzone springs....

As dragon said, get an alignment. Changing your springs will give you camber, don't believe me I'll be more than happy to find some pictures of my front wheels after I put on my TRD's.

I still miss that camber... made it look stanced as hell. D:

Not worth the tires, however.

Reply 10 : Dropzone springs....

Yeah when I put on my TRD springs I didnt notice any camber so I left it for a few monthes.. Eventually ordered some FSB and RSB and took it in to get an alignment done.. My camber was good but my toe was off by a large amount..

Reply 11 : Dropzone springs....

Camber on the front, yes, on the back no.

Reply 12 : Dropzone springs....

Well I didn't get an alignment yet since the car doesn't really pull anywhere. And the camber is on the rear but is really not that big of a deal. I just got used to its factory height with no camber and now that i lowered it, well I'm really seeing it. The springs are cheap. Dropzone from the 03-08 corolla. Maybe that's what's messing it up??? The tires should last as if I never lowered it or maybe a little less due to the camber... The thing is, I'm actually testing the springs while waiting on my tires to go bad so I can get a new set of wheels. If the springs work out for me, then I'll get the whole dropzone suspension from ebay. shocks and springs for like $350 I think not sure. If anything, I guess i'll have to go with Tein since that's all i ever had on my prior hondas.... BTW, thanks for looking out guys. I'm liking this forum.

Our car has a torsion beam rear suspension, so there will not be any camber at all. You have to get your alignment done even the car doesn't pull to the side. After you lowered your car, the front toe will be off by alot, without alignment, your front tires are gonna worn out premature. Front camber can be adjusted by using camber bolts as well....

How does installing lowering springs affect the front toe?
