Knocking sound from engine

My 05 Sienna XLE keeps having knocking sound from the engine especially at a lower speed. I researched and found that many of Sienna owners complaining about it but it seems that nothing has been done. I also found that there is a related TSB (Toyota Service Bulletin). T

When I took it to a local Toyota dealer, they suggested me to use higher octane fuel. It didn't help. One of the sienna owners mentioned that VVTi reprogramming would resolve. The other said MAF would need to be replaced..

I would like to know if any of you have experienced and resolved the issue?

Any advice would be appreciated.

If you have this issue, please take it to your local Toyota dealer and have ECU software updated. Mine was updated this morning under warranty and it runs smooth now.. so far no pinging/knocking sound.

we have the 2002 model with 116K miles and have never had a pinging/knocking sound from the motor, but we have always used mid grade fuel.

Also, I add a can of seafoam fuel cleaner to the fuel tank about twice a year. The material seams to keep the fuel system clean.

since we can not change the fuel filter, I believe the fuel system cleaner is a positive move, also never fill up if you see the fuel tanker at the station,

when they add thousands of gallons of fuel to the under ground tanks, it has to stir up all kinds of crap that normally lays on the bottom of the fuel tanks and this stuff is pump right into your fuel tank.

Our 09 is having pinging issues, but i haven't had a chance to bring it in ot the dealer. Hopefully next week. It's been doing it from the start only after sitting for at least 4 hours. Then after a few miles it goes away. Not what i expected from a new vehicle. We only have 5k on it so far.

Sent it to the dealer today and they said it was "normal". Tried to blame it on the timing chains. I know pinging when i hear it and that was definitely not timing chains. It's noted in the service record, so when it snaps a valve, i can say i told you so.

Update: My van is sounding like a super duty diesel now when you first start off in the morning for about a mile or two. Brought it to the dealer twice and they say it's normal VVT, which i think is total BS. They say they couldn't hear it. They must be deaf, because even my wife can hear it and she is no car person. Sounds like bad valve lash, oil starvation. Next step Toyota USA is going to get a call.

I would try another dealership.

You do NOT have to use the same dealership that you bought it at for waranty service.....and it should still be under waranty.

I think that 2009 should have the improved VVT oil hose already installed.

I told my wife we should take it somewhere else and have them look at it. It's just a hassle arranging things with the sitter/in-laws plus moving the car seats around. Then she has no car for a day and a half. Plan on video taping it, this way they can see and hear what is going on when I bring it back. Maybe email to Toyota. I just need time to do it.

Thanks for the onfo about the oil hose. I'll have to check it out.

do you feel any vibration on your steering wheel when your car is idle?

because i have a thread here where i explain how i can feel vibration on the steering wheel of my 09 LE, even when the engine is warm. I got only 9500 miles...

Our 2004 pings and we have had it at two different dealers and they both tell me it is fine!! I do not understand why they do not want to try and fix it under the recall?? My wife hates taking her van to the dealer we have had trouble in the past with poor work ind incorrect info. So I was wondering what the latest on this problem was? Is there something a repair shop can do or is this a Toyota only repair? I would consider paying fr the repair so my wife does not have to hassle with the B.S. at the dealer.

I used two tanks back to back with fuel injector cleaner one tank with Techron cleaner and the other tank with Lucas. I suspect I had a bunch of carbon buildup on the valves. I've always used Costco or other off brand fuels which I'm told have fewer detergents.

Don't bother trying to fix this with injector cleaner or higher octane. It's not the problem as the van can run in 87 all day long.

You need to contact Toyota HQ in California and open up a case. If your under warranty they can really get involved. If your not under warranty, then buy a good aftermarket warranty then get a case open with Headquarters and they will contact your dealership rep.

Does it sound anything like the tapping in the video in my signature? If so, thats is piston slap and isn't normal at all if it lasts 10-15min
