Leak under oil filter

Hey guys, I noticed the oil filter adapter is leaking oil from underneith. Is this a common problem? Is it easily fixed?

What's an oil filter adapter?

Anyway, if you mean where you screw in the oil filter, check to see that the old rubber gasket from the old filter isn't on there. One time I left the old seal on, drove off and pulled an Exxon Valdez on my street...the stain is still there after 4 years....

I have a adapter that is between the block and the filter. It has 2 3/4 heater hoses running from it. Under that adpter the oil is leaking when the engine is cold.

If I remember correctly there is a o-ring under the adapter. Also if you remove the oil filter you should see a large nut recessed below the base in the center, you could try gently tigten it. If not you will have to go to your dealer for the new ring and repl it. The cold contacts the rubber and it weeps, probaly doesn't leak once it is warmed up. Hope this helps

This probably isn't the case but you could have a bad seal on the oil filter because it was over-tightened or it is not tightened enough...if you can twist with your hand still then that could be the problem

It was the o-ring under the filer housing. A $3.00 part. Thanks for your help.

Just an FYI: That device is the oil cooler. It uses coolant to cool off the oil by circulating it around the oil.

Did you replace both o-rings?

Theres one underneath the stud that the filter screws onto and another one underneath the adapter (in between the adapter and the block).
