Steering Stiffness

My 275,000 mile 97 XLS has served me real well since I bought it new. Just lately, the steering is stiff/not stiff depending on what position the steering wheel is in. PS fluid is fine, volume-wise. The rack had been replaced a while back. i'm puzzled. Any ideas?

Reply 1 : Steering Stiffness

What is the condition of the fluid? It should be bright red. I would try a flush or suck out the old fluid in the reservoir and refill with new fluid.

Reply 2 : Steering Stiffness

Gonna give it a try. It could be that simple, eh? Tranny fluid (DexronIII or the like, if I recall) It'll be a cheap fix. Thanx for the suggestion.

Reply 3 : Steering Stiffness

i used regular power steering fluid in mine. works well, is a bit thicker and provides more lube than atf.

atf is vegetable oil. it is used because many parts in an automatic trans would be damaged by mineral oil. those parts (clutches, bands) are not present in power steering.

i bought a thingy with a large rubber bulb on it. i vacuumed the nasty old oil out, refilled it, and did it again (several times) with the engine running. the avvy holds very little fluid. it took me about a week to get pristine fluid running through the system and i had used about 3/4 of the quart of power steering fluid i bought.

i saved my p/s rack. hope you can.

AVOID: Brimell Toyota - Toronto, ON

Just a strong warning to anyone thinking of purchasing (and particularly SERVICING) their vehicle at Brimell Toyota in Scarborough/Toronto, ON. You will be lied to, your vehicle will be mistreated/damaged, service items will be missed, you'll waste incredible amounts of time, and you'll get attitude that one typically expects from a Chrysler dealer.

Unfortunately I've had little option but to service with this Dealership over the past years - always having to go in 2 and 3 times to resolve complaints. Frustrating to no end.

So when Toyota Canada sent me a survey about my last service visit, I was frank about the poor quality of Brimell Toyota service, lack of attention to detail, and the "not my problem" or "too difficult to resolve" attitude that many of their technician's illustrate.

Weeks go by and then Brimell's Customer Management Operations rep calls - harassing me for almost a week at home and work to schedule an appointment to resolve my on-going concerns. He talks about seeing my feedback and his committment to Customer Service, his years of experience in automotive and aerospace QA and how he really cares about these things. Alas my first warning that things were going to sour should have been how quick he was to pass the buck to Toyota Manufacturing about quality (finger pointing that somewhat surprised me - something typical of an outsider and not part of the Toyota family). Nevertheless, I'm optimistic that someone might actually care at Brimell Service Dept....so perhaps there's light at the end of the tunnel. So I bite - and schedule the service appointment to meet and resolve my defects.

Several days later he calls back and tells me that they aren't able to fix my concerns and that I should consider an alternate dealer (effectively - take my business elsewhere). I'm floored!!

It seems after going through a "panel" of staff to review my service concerns, they realized how (appropriately) low I ranked them on their Customer Satisfaction Index - and made a decision that I should take my vehicle elsewhere. Ahhh...someone's feelings got hurt...

Clearly this is a dealership that is all talk, no action - and devoid of any of any of Toyota's values (Customer First, Quality, Continuous Improvement, etc). If it was up to me, I'd pull their franchaise agreement...I'd be better off servicing my vehicle with Canadian Tire or Jiffy Lube (and a lot more convenient!!)

No I don't work for Brimell or any other dealership for that matter. I'm just a regular guy.

Ugh... what a mess.

Glad to hear that you found a better dealer now.

Got more info today from Scarborough Toyota. Car is still at the dealership but then the laundry list of fixs was pretty long. The service manager drove it home overnight to diagnose all sorts of rattles - and it was good to hear him say that he was going bonkers on the trip. Guess I wasn't being picky or going crazy afterall...

So it would appear that Brimell techs, when trying to solve my original rattle problem (singular) before bent the metal holder for the maplight - which rattled around like crazy. The also didn't correctly reinstall the headliner or rear window deck. So Scarborough took the opportunity to felt the whole deck and install properly. Excellent!

The cowling rattle against the front windshield was due to poor installation by Brimell back when they replaced this piece in the spring. They were really cheap on the felt so all sorts of spots were missed - and they even broke the cowling during install. A new part ordered, lots of felt and she's better than new.

I'm beside myself now...how can so many techs at Brimell be so bad at their job. Mindboggling.

i feel like scarborough area toyota dealers are all pretty bad.

i went to Scarborough Toyota to get a tire resealed due to a slow leak....it should have been a very very fast job but it took forever. 2 and half hours to be exact.

what drove me bonkers was that the fucker who drove my car into the mechanic's bay didn't release the handbrake and he power dragged and screeched my rear tires all the way inside...leaving tire marks everywhere

I was so pissed, but no one even came out and apologized or anything. they just acted like nothing happened.

i was supposed to get a free car wash, which was why i went. they threatened not to give me the wash if my antenna didn't go all the way back in...so i pushed it in with my hand, and they still said no ...it's not all the way in...and i had to convince them that it's the lowest it goes.

I lived in Scarborough for 4 months last year while on co-op, and safe to say I found it a better idea to commute from Oshawa for my second co-op in Toronto. Also safe to say I don't plan on living in Scarborough again.

Please help starter problem

Hey guys so I own a 1995 Corolla dx. The starter has been kinda tweaking for a few weeks like I would have to turn the key a few times to get the car started. Just now as I started the car I heard the starter still turning. I turned off the ignition it kept turning. I had to go get pliers and disconnect the battery just so the starter will quit turning. tried to connect it again and the starter just keeps turning. Need help please. Thanks.

Reply 1 : Please help starter problem

you need a new starter.

Reply 2 : Please help starter problem

Not necessarily at all. Most likely the copper contacts in the switchbox on the starter are worn. Common problem. Hence the clicking and need to try starting multiple times. The plunger probably got stuck engaged on the eroded contacts. If the starter has not yet been fried due to continues turning it is quite probable that all you need is a new set of contacts.

There is a thread that describes how to fix this. Search for "how to replace starter contacts"

1993 Corolla Photoshoot - New Zealand (Updated 14th March - Page 31)

I decided to go and take some photos of my car today since it was nice and sunny, these were taken about 2-hours ago. It was a spur of the moment type of decision so the car was unwashed, hopefully it doesn't look dirty in the photos. The hardest part was dealing with the overexposure from the sun on the white paint, but I got there in the end. All of the shots have been resized to cut down on loading times.

This thread contains a large amount of updates and new photos from various locations. Check through the following pages to see the progress. The last update is noted in the thread title. Alternatively, feel free to check out my CarDomain page by clicking the link in my signature, or by clicking here.

Comments very welcome.

Already been dropped bro . Any lower and my aftermarket front pipe for my exhaust would literally be scraping along the ground. I'm not a fan of going too low, particularly because I carry passengers in the back quite often. Have a look through my old photos to see how high it was before I lowered it, it was like a bloody monster truck! Lol.

Thanks man, glad you like them. The place where I took these photos is called 'Musick Point'. It was deserted today due to everyone being at work, but gets really busy over the Christmas break. Always a very photogenic place to go, especially when the sun is out like today.

The wheels are only 17".

Reply 9 : 1993 Corolla Photoshoot - New Zealand (Updated 14th March - Page 31)

yea which i think are too big on a corolla

Reply 10 : 1993 Corolla Photoshoot - New Zealand (Updated 14th March - Page 31)

16's look too small in my opinion. I chose the 17's because they fill up the guards nicely, and the tyres are cheaper to replace.

Reply 11 : 1993 Corolla Photoshoot - New Zealand (Updated 14th March - Page 31)

you mean less wheel gap? I have 16's and with the right tire size, you fill up the wheel gap.

Yep, these are unedited shots - Although I did shoot them in HDR to handle the strong glare from the sun hitting the white paint and causing overexposure. Other than that they're basically straight out of the camera (Canon 450D DSLR).

airbag code 31

My 95 avalon's airbag light is constantly on. I tried clearing it but no go. Shorting TC ad E gave me a code 31. Anyone know what that is? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Chuck

Reply 1 : airbag code 31

Looks like your airbag sensor assy. That's the airbag ecu in the center of your dash.

Unless a bad connection, looks like you'll need a new one.

Sorry, it's under the center console compartment. (towards the rear) Has there been any beverage spills possibly?

Reply 2 : airbag code 31

I took a quick look at it. No spills. Everything looked intact. Anyone know how the cabling is routed for the airbag sensor system? Are there impact sensors located in the front end someplace? I may end up taking the car to the dealer service dept.

Reply 3 : airbag code 31

Bought a used airbag ECU off ebay. It came out of a 96 Avalon. Installed it in my 95. Airbag light gone.

O2 Sensor Help

I've been searching around on the site and looking for an answer to this question but havent found one i like yet. i need a downstream O2 sensor and i know the right thing to do is go to the dealer but 186 dollars isnt something i have. obviously it doesnt need to be taken care of right away and i have a '95 avi so inspections arent a problem but has anyone put a NTK or Denso O2 sensor in theirs and had any luck?

Thanks,

Geoff

Reply 1 : O2 Sensor Help

Just a suggestion, Geoff, but you might want to search the Camry forums as well for info. There are a number of threads like this one.....

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/sh...light=denso+o2

...discussing Denso O2 sensors, etc. Hope it can help shed light on that for you.

Reply 2 : O2 Sensor Help

I put a denso in a few years ago and haven't had any problems. part # is 234-4209. they are about 35 bucks on amazon.com. if you are talking about the one by the cat converter then heat it up with a torch a bit and it will come out a lot easier. pull the carpet up on the passenger side to get to the wires.

Reply 3 : O2 Sensor Help

Ya i know how to do it. i pulled the resonator section off the avi because i had to weld a new flange on it. while i was doing the metal work i broke the sensor . Oh well something had to go wrong eventually something always does haha. but ya i wanted to know of peoples experiences thnks for the part number saved me some research time.

95 Avalon Car Audio Sound Quality

Hi all...I just had a new audio system installed in my 95 Avalon and it does not sound good...here's what I had installed:

Pioneer DEHP690UB Head Unit

Polk DB5251 5 1/4 components in the front door

Polk DB690 6x9's in the rear deck

and Alpine MRPF550 amp in the trunk

The 6x9's sound good (except they are a little over powering the 5 1/4) but the 5 1/4 components do not sound so good at higher volumes. Also, I had a window tinting/car audio store that I did not buy the equipment from do the install. Do you guys think I need to tinker with the gain or do you think baffles would help the components in the front door?

I appreciate your comments.

Reply 1 : 95 Avalon Car Audio Sound Quality

I personally have 5 1/4 components at the front of my car. They sound pretty good to me, even at the higher volumes. At maximum, they do distort a little, but I think that's because my amp is a little strong for my fronts.

I didn't put any baffles on my speakers. Just put them in the original opening and used some long wood screws to hold them in. I have to re-adjust one, though, because I had to kinda force the door panel back on the passenger front. Just a matter of angling the speaker right.

I can't be too sure of what's wrong with your setup, though. What exactly doesn't sound right to you? Distorted? Too quiet?

Reply 2 : 95 Avalon Car Audio Sound Quality

"Does not sound good" is pretty vague, for starters try turning down the gain on both/all amplifier channels. If the rear is overpowering the front, then turn down the rear's amp channel

Its always better to compensate by adjusting the volume/gain down, not up.

If the distortion is gone, which I presume is the problem then proceed with something like this :

Turn off all equalizers, bass/treble enhancement stuff.

Turn the amplifier gains all the way down.

turn the head unit to 75% volume

Begin adjusting the gain on the amplifiers until you hear distortion out of the speakers.

Done!
